Realms

Realms are an integral part of the virtual server system. A realm is a distinct set of usernames and group names associated with a particular directory or virtual path location.

Using Realms

By creating separate realms and configuring separate user and group databases for each realm, you can more effectively partition access to different locations on the server. You can assign separate access restrictions for different directories on the server according to the realm of the requesting client. This eliminates the need for maintaining large centralized group and user databases. Used with virtual servers, realms let you create a complete multiserver environment on a single system.

Once you have configured realms, you can filter client requests that come from internal and external clients. By allowing you to configure both virtual servers and realms, the Purveyor Encrypt WebServer lets you create centrally managed, independent multiple servers on a single system.

Because you cannot copy user and group configurations, you must create several realms first if you intend to distribute users and groups to multiple realms.

Configuring Realms

Until you configure additional realms, Purveyor keeps a single set of user and group databases called Default realm.

You cannot delete the Default realm.

You can configure additional realms and set specific access restrictions for users and groups that are in the same realm. You can also modify or delete an existing realm. The Users and Groups selections from the Remote Server Management (RSM) Main Page let you specify the realm to which the new user or group belongs. Also from these selections, you can configure separate groups and users for separate organizations. You can even include a particular user in several realms.

You cannot transfer user or group configurations from one realm to another. If you want to include groups or users in realms other than the Default realm, you must use the Realms selection from the RSM Main Page. From this page, you need to create separate realms and specify the realm to which the new groups and users belong.

When you create, modify, or delete realms, you use RSM to define the realm attribute.

For more information about realms, see the section Planning the Server’s Configuration.
