All works fine until a bad message is received. The recipient name is valid, but the machine name is missing though the DNS domain name is ok. E.G. system@system1.domain.com would be correct, and the bad message type would be system@domain.com. When the bad message gets to the system, it creating a process smtpdxxxx, which runs continuously, and create and entry for this process in the tcpware.spool directory. As the source e-mail server retries, more of these processes get created, each using up a percentage of the cpu resource, and network bandwidth. My question is, how can I get tcpware to accept this mail, or reject it, and send back to the sender that it was refused. I can't locate manuals for this version, and the online ones are to new for reference on this version. I am sure there is an easy fix for this.. If they are missing something, you have to work it out with that admin to get it added. >Or can I only hardwire RR in cache >which also do really exist in the authoritative nameserver's zone ? The cache [also known as the root hints file] is just for hints to the root servers, it's the file that the nameserver uses on startup to know who to ask who the root servers are. When the nameserver starts up, it reads in the root servers, and sends queries to each of the servers in that file asking for the NS records for the root zone. > >I'd like to avoid setting up my own (duplicate) authoritative zone for >this domain (which has this additional line) because of the 'keep current' >problems. But if the developer implements other behaviour in addition then it might be possible. Right ? ;-) So, adding NS RRs for COM, NET or AT to NAMED.CA doesn't help either ? If you put a sequence in the RESET module's library entry that returns the printer to your chosen "default" state, and put the "go to landscape" sequence in the form's SETUP module, you can print LANDSCAPE (or whatever else you want to set up) by specifying the proper form on the PRINT command. Check the Administrator's Guide, Table 17-2, TCPWARE_TELNETD_FLAGS Logical Bit Description. To add the port, define the logical TCPWARE_TELNETD_FLAGS so that bit 8 is set as 1: $ define/system/exec tcpware_telnetd_flags 256 or bit 9, depending on what you want. > 2. You can turn those off by editing your TCPWARE_NAMED_ROOT:NAMED.CONF file. I'd recommend you read the DNS chapter of the Administrator's Guide for the logging levels you want. Adding these lines will turn off those messages (and perhaps more than you want): logging { category statistics { null; }; category maintenance { null; }; }; Hunter ------ Hunter Goatley, Process Software, http://www.process.com/ http://www.goatley.com/hunter/ ================================================================================ Archive-Date: Sun, 22 Jul 2001 06:06:06 -0400 Date: Sun, 22 Jul 2001 11:58:37 +0200 From: martin@radiogaga.harz.de (Martin Vorlaender) Subject: Re: TCPware 5.5-3 To: info-tcpware@process.com Reply-To: Info-TCPware@process.com Message-ID: <3b5aa3cd.524144494f47414741@radiogaga.harz.de> Mah, Lee (lytmah@cha.ab.ca) wrote: > I've upgraded to 5.5-3 on VMS 7.1-2 for several days now on a node (m) of a > cluster. Welcome to bind8 :-) Have a look at the docs of the "logging" named.conf section, or at earlier posts by Jeff Schreiber in this group: logging { /* Print notice and above to opcom. Include category and severity */ channel syslog_notice { syslog daemon; severity notice; print-category yes; print-severity yes; }; /* Print info and above to opcom. Include category and severity */ channel syslog_info { syslog daemon; severity info; print-category yes; print-severity yes; }; /* print default categories info and above to opcom */ category default { syslog_info; }; /* ** except stats and maintenance logging, filter out ** their info messages and only print notice and above */ category statistics { syslog_notice; }; category maintenance { syslog_notice; }; }; There are a lot more categories. You can find the official documentation at http://www.isc.org/products/BIND/docs/index.html Isn't this already in the tip'n'tricks section on the Process website? It produced a large number of sys$manager:imapd.dmp files (all unfortunately deleted by now, but I think it should be easy to reproduce.) From what I heard second-hand, it didn't die every time it was used but did die frequently. It may have been dependent on the contents of certain people's mail files. They tried to use the IMAP server on a VAX in the same cluster that I had updated to TCPWare V5.5-3 several weeks ago, and it worked fine, but I'm not sure if they had the same default disk/mail file on the VAX as on the Alpha. Most users on our cluster have multiple accounts (separate UAF files, pointing to different default disks and/or directories) on the different nodes. I don't know if they copied the mail files to their VAX disk/directory or if they had a common default directory for both nodes or if they were using the VAX IMAP to read an empty mail file. Anyway, I re-installed the TCPWare V5.4-3 IMAPD.EXE from a backup and the problems went away. I don't believe we've had any reports, so please open a support call with with as much info as you can gather (capturing one of the .DMP files would be great; your Support contact can tell you how to get the .DMP file to us). The Unix-like buffer overflow that causes system crashes and/or root access security holes doesn't exist on VMS... it's a difference in the design of the OS itself. The only concern you should have with any sort of buffer overflow exploits is the server process application crashing. I'm cc'ing this to the tcpware list as well so that those customers get a response to a question that they will most likely be asking in the near future! Now, with that said, let me jump into the specific exploit. The Multinet and the TCPware telnet servers aren't based on the BSD telnetd implementation. However just to be sure, I inspected our code in the areas that handle the same functionality that the BSD problem surfaced in. There appears to be no possibility of buffer overflows in these areas of the code. So on preliminary inspection, it is safe to state that neither TCPware nor Multinet is vulnerable. However further in-depth testing will be done and you all will be notified if a problem is uncovered. -Jeff -- Jeff Schreiber Principal Software Engineer Process Software LLC schreiber@mx.process.com http://www.process.com TCPware, MultiNet & PMDF: Stronger than Ever ================================================================================ Archive-Date: Fri, 27 Jul 2001 12:52:53 -0400 Date: Fri, 27 Jul 2001 09:51:29 -0700 From: dframeli@aus.telusa.com (Dale Frameli) Subject: UCX v3.0, How to "SET CONFIG ENABLE SERVICE FILSRV200"? To: info-tcpware@process.com Reply-To: Info-TCPware@process.com Message-ID: Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit I have a DEC3000-300X which runs OpenVMS 1.5 and utilizes UCX 3.0. I have created a "service" and have enabled it. When I reboot the system, the service is still there, but it is disabled. In later versions of UCX, you can type something similiar to: UCX>SET CONFIG ENABLE SERVICE FILSRV200 to save the service state, and thus have it enabled when the system is restarted. In UCX v3.0, this command does not appear to exist :( How can I enable a service after restart if I'm using UCX v3.0? Due to buget constrains, upgrading the operating system or UCX is not a possibility. Thanks Dale dframeli@aus.telusa.com
