26 May, 9.30-10.30 Jeff Schreiber Process Software Corporation Domain Name System Introduction and Overview Objectives: - Gain a basic understanding of how the Domain Name System protocol works - Have some ideas on how to modify their existing Domain Name System configurations to be more secure and fault tolerance - Gain a familiarity with the DNS architecture including the function of resolvers, slave and master servers. Abstract: This session presents an introduction and overview of the DNS (Domain Name System) protocol. This includes the history of how DNS evolved, how it is needed and relates to everyday TCP/IP use and the basic functionality of client and servers. Included will be an overview of some of the directives and options commonly found in DNS implementations, and how to use those to fine tune your system or aid in it's security. Also included will be some of the new protocols added to DNS to aid in the expansion and security of users networks. Audience: Some familiarity with DNS is helpful, but not required.
